Why Tanzania

An iconic East African safari with remarkable wildlife variety

Leopard resting in the Serengeti during a Tanzania safari

Tanzania is one of the first destinations many travellers associate with an African safari. The Serengeti, the Great Migration and the Ngorongoro Crater have become symbols of classic East Africa, supported by varied landscapes and excellent wildlife opportunities.

A northern Tanzania journey can move from Tarangire’s baobabs and elephants to the dramatic Ngorongoro Crater and the open plains of the Serengeti. The route can be adapted according to the season, expected migration movement, preferred lodge style and the amount of time available.

Tanzania also combines naturally with Zanzibar, allowing guests to follow an active safari with several slower days beside the Indian Ocean.

  • The Serengeti and its seasonal wildlife movement
  • Ngorongoro Crater wildlife and volcanic scenery
  • Tarangire’s baobabs and strong elephant-viewing opportunities
  • Private guiding throughout the northern circuit
  • Comfortable lodges and tented safari camps
  • Zanzibar as the main beach extension
Traveller Suitability

Is Tanzania Right for You?

Tanzania can suit a wide range of travellers because the route, accommodation and pace can be adapted around the people travelling.

Tanzania is particularly well suited to first-time and experienced safari travellers, couples, honeymooners, families, photographers, small private groups and older travellers.

The featured northern-circuit journey works best for guests who want wildlife to remain the main focus, appreciate private guiding and are comfortable with road travel and longer game-drive days. Older travellers can be accommodated by selecting suitable lodges, managing driving times and balancing active safari days with a comfortable pace.

  • First-time and experienced safari travellers
  • Couples and honeymooners
  • Families travelling with children from around six years old
  • Photographers and small private groups
  • Older travellers requiring a carefully paced route
  • Guests wanting a safari-and-beach combination
Where A Tanzania Journey Can Lead

Core Northern Tanzania Regions

The northern circuit is planned as a connected route, with each region adding a different landscape, wildlife experience and rhythm to the journey.

Baobabs & Elephants

Tarangire National Park

We normally recommend two nights in Tarangire. The park works particularly well at the beginning of the northern circuit, introducing guests to Tanzania through baobab landscapes, varied wildlife and strong elephant-viewing opportunities.

Crater & Wildlife

Ngorongoro Crater

Two nights usually allow enough time for one full-day crater game drive. Guests may stay on the crater rim for views and easier access or in Karatu for a broader range of accommodation and value options.

Plains & Migration

Serengeti National Park

We recommend at least three nights, although four nights divided between two areas is often better. The selected regions should reflect the season, route and expected wildlife movement.

Beach & Culture

Zanzibar

Four to five nights work well after safari, allowing time to relax and enjoy beaches, snorkelling, boat trips, water-based activities and cultural experiences. The correct coast should be selected because tides affect swimming conditions differently.

Journey Inspiration

Tarangire, Ngorongoro & the Serengeti

This nine-night route is an example of how the northern circuit can work together. It is not a fixed package and will be adapted around each guest’s dates, preferred accommodation, wildlife interests, pace and budget.

More Information

Open any question below for practical guidance about Tanzania’s travel style, timing, wildlife, accommodation, costs and possible extensions.

Is Tanzania right for you?

Tanzania suits first-time and experienced safari travellers, couples, honeymooners, families, photographers, small private groups and older travellers when the route and pace are selected carefully.

The featured northern-circuit journey is particularly well suited to guests who want wildlife to remain the main focus, appreciate private guiding and are comfortable with a combination of road travel and longer game-drive days.

Zanzibar can be added for travellers who want to balance safari with several slower days beside the Indian Ocean.

How does one travel through Tanzania?

Northern Tanzania is usually explored as a privately guided road safari, with one professional guide and one safari vehicle allocated to the guests throughout the circuit.

Private Guide & Vehicle

Couples, families and small groups gain greater privacy and flexibility around stops, game-drive timing and daily pace.

Road & Air

Road travel can be combined with light-aircraft flights where distances are longer or time is limited, particularly when leaving the Serengeti. An arrival night in Arusha may be recommended when flight timings make an immediate departure impractical.

Lodges & Camps

Accommodation may include permanent lodges, tented safari camps and seasonal migration camps.

Comfort Level

The journey can use comfortable, good-value to mid-range accommodation or more luxurious lodges and camps.

How long should you spend in Tanzania?

Nine nights work well for Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Ten to eleven nights allow time to add Lake Manyara and create a slower or more detailed route.

A northern Tanzania and Zanzibar journey generally works well over approximately 14 nights. A shorter seven-night safari can be created without Zanzibar, although the routing must be planned carefully.

When is the best time to travel to Tanzania?

Tanzania can be visited throughout the year, although the best route depends on the month, wildlife priorities and weather.

June to October

The main dry season and one of the most popular periods for wildlife viewing.

January to March

Can be particularly rewarding in the southern Serengeti during the period commonly associated with calving.

July to October

May offer opportunities in the northern Serengeti, including the possibility of river crossings. Crossings cannot be guaranteed.

November

Often brings shorter rains, greener scenery, rewarding birdlife and potentially lower visitor numbers.

April and May

Usually receive heavier seasonal rainfall, which can affect roads, activities and the overall safari experience.

How should the Serengeti and Great Migration be planned?

The Serengeti consists of several different regions, and the most suitable area changes according to season and expected wildlife movement.

Four nights divided between two areas can create a more varied experience when the season and routing support it. Permanent lodges, tented camps and seasonal migration camps may all be considered according to budget, comfort and location.

The Great Migration is a continuous natural movement rather than a scheduled event. Herd locations, calving activity and river crossings can never be guaranteed.

What wildlife experience should you expect?

Tanzania offers excellent wildlife variety across contrasting landscapes. Tarangire is particularly associated with elephants and baobab scenery, the Ngorongoro Crater offers concentrated wildlife viewing, and the Serengeti provides vast plains, predators and seasonal herd movement.

Birdlife, flamingos in suitable conditions, monkeys and Lake Manyara’s varied landscapes can add further diversity.

Wildlife remains unpredictable and no individual species or sighting can be guaranteed.

Is Tanzania suitable for travelling with children?

Tanzania can work very well for families when the route, lodge setup and daily pace are planned carefully. A private guide and vehicle provide privacy and flexibility around stops, timing and the children’s needs.

From practical experience, around six years old is a sensible minimum for many northern-circuit safaris because road transfers and game drives can be long, although this is guidance rather than a universal restriction.

Family rooms, interconnecting rooms and suitable lodge activities can be selected where available. Lodge age restrictions and activity requirements must be checked for the selected properties.

Guests should obtain qualified travel-health advice for their route and dates.

What does a Tanzania journey cost?

A nine-night safari combining Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti would generally begin from around $5,700 per person.

A ten- to eleven-night version including Lake Manyara would generally begin from around $6,800 per person, while a 14-night northern Tanzania and Zanzibar journey would generally begin from around $7,900 per person.

A more luxurious fly-in or migration-focused journey may begin from approximately $9,100 to $10,200 per person.

These prices are starting guidance based on shared accommodation and exclude international flights. Final pricing depends on season, lodge selection, vehicle arrangements, routing, number of guests and availability.

Is Lake Manyara worth adding?

Lake Manyara can be a worthwhile half-day addition for guests who enjoy forest scenery, birdlife, Rift Valley landscapes, monkeys and a fuller itinerary.

It works well while travelling from Tarangire towards Karatu or the Ngorongoro area. Wildlife viewing is generally less intense than in Tarangire, Ngorongoro or the Serengeti, and tree-climbing lion sightings cannot be guaranteed.

It is not essential for guests who prefer a slower pace.

How do you choose the right Zanzibar coast?

Zanzibar can be visited during much of the year, but rainfall, wind and tides should be considered when selecting the travel dates and beach area.

Tides have a noticeable effect on swimming conditions in some parts of the island. The correct coast and property should therefore be selected according to whether the guest values swimming, water sports, seclusion, family facilities or access to cultural experiences.

How can you extend the journey?

The featured safari can be adapted by adding a Lake Manyara game drive, upgrading to more luxurious lodges or tented camps, or adding four to five nights in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar

Four to five nights after safari allow time to relax while still including snorkelling, boat trips, water-based activities and cultural experiences. Zanzibar is not included in the featured eight-night safari price.

Kenya

Tanzania can be combined with Kenya when guests have enough time and budget for a wider East African journey. The route should avoid unnecessary duplication and ensure that each country adds a distinct experience.
